Slumdog Millionaire (Music From the Motion Picture)

A.R. Rahman works at a furious pace: the Indian film composer has written more than a hundred scores since he entered the industry in the ‘90s. He has contributed music to projects such as Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India, which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 2002, and more recently, Danny Boyle’s Slumdog Millionaire where he mixes Bollywood stylings with various dance music genres. M.I.A. provides vocals on the opening cut, Rahman’s “O…Saya”, and she sounds right at home on the high-energy track. (“Paper Planes”, from M.I.A.’s Kala, and a funky DFA remix of the same song, are also included here.) Speedy vocalizing, swirling strings, and stuttering percussion mark “Liquid Dance”, which features Palakkad Sriram and Madhumitha, while “Latika’s Theme”, with wordless vocals by Suzanne, displays Rahman’s mellow side. The hip-hop-flavored “Gangsta’s Blues” is followed by “Dreams on Fire”, which gives “Latika’s Theme” a fuller workout, including lyrics emotively sung by Suzanne. A pair of Rahman instrumentals, the churning “Riots” and the grand “Mausam and Escape”, stand up well against the vocal pieces.
